Freaky Friday: University of the Cumberlands

Before it became the University of the Cumberlands, Cumberland College was a small school in Kentucky. CC was the type of school where everyone knows each other, according to a Facebook post by alumnae Carson H.

Many Cumberland College alumni have taken to a Facebook group created by Mykie H. to reminisce about their college days, reconnect with old friends and share stories of their alma mater. A particularly spooky story of a mysterious girl who repeatedly showed up in the Johnson Hall dorm yet was unknown to any of its residents. The rumor is recounted here in Carson H’s own words:

“The freshman girls dorm has had several incidences on the third floor where they see a girl who does not live there. Sometimes the girl is crying and sometimes she just stares. Other times she is there and disappears. Doors close and open, TV’s and stereos come on and off, radios and computers turn on. Padlocked doors are opened and then when you walk back by (minutes later) it will be locked. Some days it is locked and you can see lights from underneath the door leading up to the attic.”

Not everyone seems to agree about the truth behind the stories, but it seems many of the members had heard it. Like the college itself, Johnson Hall has since been renamed and is known to current students as Gillespie, according to a Facebook post. Did the rumors end with the name change?
