Freaky Friday: Yale University

New Haven, Connecticut is home to Yale, one of the country’s top universities. It came as no surprise that a school of this stature should have a few spooky stories, and this one is unlike any we have found so far! Open your mind to this spooky tale from Yale.

Harkness Memorial Dormitory
Rumors of a collection of preserved human brains had circulated the medical school at Yale for decades, yet no one had ever seen anything to confirm their existence. In 1996, a medical student named Christopher Wall had heard the rumors and took it upon himself to put them to rest – one way or another. A resident of the Harkness Memorial Dormitory, Wall set off to uncover the collection, starting with the place where the rumors claimed the collection dwelled. Though he did not have permission to conduct his search or poke around in the basement, he plundered on in hopes of finding what most believed only to be a tall tale. It was in the subbasement of Harkness Memorial that he found what he was looking for: a vast collection of hundreds of human brains, preserved in jars of formaldehyde.

At long last, the mystery was solved and the rumors proved to be true.

The brains had once been the subject of research of Dr. Harvey Cushing, a leading neurosurgeon in the early 1900s. His collection also included photos of patients and the physical symptoms they endured from a variety of conditions. Dr. Cushing’s work helped reduce infection while operating on the brain by improving sterilization procedures, which resulted in lower death rates among brain surgery patients.
