Believe it or not, today is the official “First Day of Winter.” And while we’re excited to welcome in the season of cozy scarves and steaming mugs of hot chocolate, it’s no secret that Jack Frost nipping at your nose can wreak serious havoc on your skin.
Rule #1: Skincare still starts from the inside-out.
Don’t think that because summer is over, all your warm-weather skincare rules just fly out the window. Staying hydrated is just as important during the chilly days of winter as it was during the scorching summer heat. Just like any other organ in your body, your skin needs water to function properly. Drinking plenty of water is a good place to start, but eating high water content food – like cucumbers or tomatoes – is a great way to stay hydrated too.
Rule #2: Exfoliate sparingly, but regularly.
Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells from the outer surface of your skin (yum?). When done effectively, it helps keep skin smooth and allows it to absorb moisturizer better. During the wintertime skin can become dry and flaky, so use a mild exfoliant once or twice a week to help keep it polished. However, avoid over-doing it – this can cause breakouts, puffiness, irritation, and even more dryness.
Rule #3: Don’t forget about your lips.
Rule #4: Skip the extra-hot shower.
There’s nothing like a hot shower on a cold day, but keep an eye on the temperature of the water. Not surprisingly, water that’s too hot will just dry out your skin and wash away your natural oils.
Rule #5. Don’t skimp on the sunscreen.
Remember how we said in Rule #1 that summer skincare rules still apply? Sunscreen should still be worn every day – even throughout the winter! The air might be cold, but the sun’s UV rays are still active during this time of year.
