Deep Breath…5 Reasons It’s Okay to Change Your Major

Coming to the realization that you don’t like your major can easily send someone into panic mode. Relax. Deep breath. It’s totally okay! Let us explain why.

1. You learned about yourself.

Keep in mind that college is a journey. Realizing you want to change your major just means you’ve learned something about yourself along the way. You now know more about your likes, dislikes, and generally who you are as a person. That’s a good thing!

2. Your happiness is important.

Your major should ultimately be something you’re happy to learn about. If you dread going to class every day and have no interest in the concepts you’re learning about, is it really worth it?

Remember, your major plays a big part in your future. If you’re not happy now, will you be happy when you start your career?

3. You’ll put more passion into your work.

It’s easy to do the bare minimum when you lack interest in your major, but when you love what you’re doing, you’re eager to learn and succeed. This is super important when you’re trying to start a career! Building your professional life from the ground up will seem less like a necessary task and more like a fulfilling journey.

4. It’s not worth the regret.

Does the thought of hating your major consume your mind? If you’ve gotten to the point where it seems to even haunt you in your sleep, then you probably won’t be able to just brush off that feeling and move on – even after college! Save yourself the ‘what if’s’ and follow your heart. You don’t want to look back and think, “I wish I had done it while I had the chance.”

5. There’s always more time.

One of the biggest reasons that students choose not to change their major is because they fear they don’t have the time. Guess what? It’s not a race! But if you’re really concerned about getting that diploma quickly, you can always visit your academic adviser to assist with mapping out a plan.
