The tunnels underneath the University of South Carolina’s campus are off-limits to students, faculty and the like, and for good reason: the “Third Eye Man” is believed to dwell down there. The legend of the “Third Eye Man” dates back to November of 1949, when two students reported witnessing a man dressed in silver, pry open a manhole cover on USC’s campus and disappear into the sewer below. One of the students wrote for the school paper and began spreading the word of the figure, whom he dubbed “Sewer Man”.
The incident seemed isolated until the following April when a campus police officer found what he initially believed to be a prank. The officer reported chicken remnants scattered across a loading dock and when he returned to the scene, he found himself in the company of a man dressed in silver. The light from his flashlight illuminated a scary face, complete with a third eye in the middle of the man’s forehead, which frightened the officer into leaving the scene to request back-up. Upon his return, there was no sign of the strange silver man and only a few fragments of bones and feathers remained.
The tales above lead us to the “catacombs” of USC, which were a hot spot for students in the late 1960’s. On an October evening, a few pledges were taken to the tunnels by their fraternity. As the students wound their way through the tunnels, they came across a sliver-clad man carrying a lead pipe, who proceeded to charge at the group. The police were alerted and a search was conducted, but the “Third Eye Man” was never found.
I could not find any stories of recent sightings of the mysterious “Third Eye Man”, yet the tunnels remain closed as a precaution. Do you believe the tale? Are there other stories about him at the University of South Carolina? Share your stories with us in the comments below!
