“Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely,” said Augustine Rodin. ‘College years’ are an important time in one’s life to make friends, create memories, be social and develop an education all at once.
Hail to George Mason! When you first arrive on campus, it can seem chaotic! Countless types of people you’ve never seen before, each more unique than the next. However, even though there are thousands of diverse students, there is a close knit of friends you will develop within the first week.
George Mason, located in Fairfax, Va. extremely close to the nation’s capital, is an up and-coming university. Mason’s slogan, “innovation is tradition,” not only exemplifies this campus, it expresses Mason’s values as a whole. Mason is a close-knit family as well as the communities surrounding it, striving to be the best it can be. The seven-foot tall George Mason statue greets students from all over the country. It’s not only a campus symbol; it has become lovingly embraced by the university community. The statue is a constant reminder of the ideals most important to the university: freedom and learning. Legend has it that rubbing Mason’s toe before an exam will give students good luck!
Don your green and gold! Is it basketball season yet? Mason gives encouragement and cheer to it’s fans come October. Cheerleaders, Masonette’s dance team, pep band, Doc Nix & the Green Machine, and the Gunston mascot, provide entertainment and spirit for thousands. “The Green Machine” provides a unique link between music and athletics, to promote school spirit and morale. “The Green Machine” has also performed for a wide variety of audiences and events on a national level. Mason excels in not only basketball, but 12 other sports. Our traditional Mason Madness game in the middle of October, gives students a glimpse of this year’s men and women basketball teams during a night of fun with appearances by NYC Bucket Drummer “Peter Rabbit”, Doc Nix and the Green Machine, Urbanknowlogy, the Masonettes and the Mason Cheerleaders. Come Spring, it is Homecoming time! Make sure your all decked out for this event! Mason has a tailgate event during the day, with food, contests, and games following a huge basketball game at night! I look forward to this event all year!
As soon as you step foot on this GREEN campus, there are thousands of opportunities, activities, sports games, and diverse students. Mason is gradually growing and expanding architecturally as well as academically. I love being a George Mason student and I’m so excited to get a kick into fall semester! GO PATRIOTS!!!!
