Inspiration comes from all over and right now it’s hailing from the Bronx, NY in the form of John Orozco. Orozco is a 2012 Olympic contender for the US Men’s Gymnastics team and the inspiration for the Gym Class Heroes’ latest hit The Fighter ft. Ryan Tedder. Even as a child, the soft-spoken – but tough – Orozco enjoyed gymnastics. Despite being surrounded by gang violence, he was able to rise above and focus on his dreams.
Back in 2005, Orozco and his brother were accosted by a gang and, in the process, his wrist was broken. The next day, Orozco left for Nationals where he competed despite the injury. Afterwards, he said the injury only encouraged him to work harder. John was able to keep on competing at a high level and he began training at the USOTC in Colorado Springs, CO, under coach Vitaly Marinitch.
During his fifth event at the 2010 US Nationals tournament, he tore his Achilles tendon on Vault. Luckily, he was able to undergo surgery and rehab in order to compete again. His story was so impressive that the Gym Class Heroes took note and created an inspirational video featuring him. Here is The Fighter, which features Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic :
Have the chills yet? John Orozco is one to watch this summer – nothing can stop him now.
