Trend Alert: Green Smoothies

Green smoothies have been on the rise for quite some time now, but their popularity isn’t slowing down anytime soon. At first glance, it’s a bit hard to see why so many people enjoy drinking these blended greens – typically, we’re used to sweet and fruity smoothies! This trend is HUGE, though, so we knew it must be worth exploring.

What are green smoothies?

Green smoothies are similar to the fruit smoothies that you’re used to, except they contain leafy greens instead of just fruit. Although the type of greens vary based on the recipe you’re making, the most commonly used greens include spinach, kale, chard, collards, watercress and dandelion greens. As for fruit, you’ll still find that in green smoothies. Fruit is blended with the greens to provide the right texture and consistency, and to mask the flavor of the greens. We were a bit relieved when we found out it wouldn’t taste like drinking spinach!

 

What are the benefits?

Green smoothies are an easy way to get your daily serving of fruit and vegetables. What’s great about a smoothie as opposed to a juice is that you get all the benefits of eating the vegetables whole since nothing is extracted from them. What are those benefits? Take a look:

  • Rich in antioxidants and nutrients
  • Great source of vitamins
  • Natural source of energy
  • Great for digestion
  • Rich in minerals
  • Low calories, but very filling

 

How do I make one?

There are plenty of recipes out there that you can try based on your own preferences. If you’re looking to try out a bunch of recipes on your own, this infographic is a great guide to get started with. If you’d like to start slow, try out the simple recipe below!

Ingredients

1 frozen and sliced banana
8-10 large strawberries
2 handfuls of baby spinach leaves
1 cup of cold water or coconut water
1 cup of ice

Directions

Combine banana, strawberries, baby spinach, water, and ice in a blender. Blend until it’s a smooth consistency. Serve immediately.
