Nailing the Skype Interview

When it comes to interview prep, we’re typically used to preparing for a face-to-face session. Skype interviews have a whole new set of rules to keep in mind. Check out our best tips on nailing your digital interview, and landing your dream job!

Keep a clean profile

Your friends and family might appreciate your clever username and that hilarious profile picture you have, but your potential employer won’t! Make sure your photo is professional and your username is close to your actual name.

Choose an ideal location.

The focus should be on you, so avoid any location that might distract your interviewer – say no to flashy decor, a visible mess, or background movement. Set yourself up in front of a plain wall!

Avoid harsh lighting.

Too much light in front of you will wash out your face, while a harsh light behind you will cause your face to turn into a silhouette. Make sure not to sit in front of a window!

Dress Appropriately.

Your attire for a Skype interview should be the same as an in-person interview. We don’t recommend trying to pull off pajama pants – one wrong move could blow your cover!

Check your Technology.

Avoid any last minute stress by making sure you have a strong WiFi connection and a working webcam. Grab a friend for a test run just to be safe!

Get rid of distractions.

Turn your phone on silent, close any extra applications on your computer, and make sure everyone else around knows not to interrupt your interview.
