10 Money-Saving Hacks your Piggy Bank Will Thank You For

Master the art of saving money! Our partners at College Ave Student Loans shared their best tips for saving a few extra dollars during your time on campus. Keep reading!

Dashes

1.Get yourself a piggy bank.

Don’t worry, this doesn’t have to be an actual ceramic pig. Find a place to stash your spare change and make a commitment to putting what you can in it. Come up with a method that works for you.

2. Get in touch with your inner “couponer.”

Don’t knock it, ’til you try it. Don’t buy anything – clothes, food, etc. – without checking for a coupon first. Even 10% off adds up after a while.

3. Buy in bulk (when you can).

Obviously this only applies to those with the space to store extra items and to items that don’t have a real expiration date attached. Fruits and vegetables? Skip the bulk buy. Paper towels? If you can save by buying in bulk, go for it.

4. Save on your online shopping.

Browser extensions like Honey automatically find promo codes for you. Use these types of things to make sure you’re taking advantage of every deal possible.

5. Buy generic.

Don’t skip the store brand. Most store brand grocery items are no different than the well-known versions. Look for the generic option and watch the savings add up.

6. Make a shopping list.

Making a quick trip to the mall? List out exactly what you need and stick to it. If you go in with a set goal, you’re less likely to wander around and browse which leads to buying things you don’t need.

List

7. Remove any auto-populated info.

It’s easy to impulse shop when all of your information is stored on your favorite site. Having  to fill out all of your shipping and billing information takes time, which is much more likely to deter you from making a purchase.

8. Drink more water.

This one sounds weird, but hear us out! Most restaurants charge for drinks like sodas, coffee, and tea, but few actually charge extra for water. It’s the healthier, cheaper option – so stick with it.

9. Pay cash.

Research has shown that when you pay in cash you’re likely to spend less. Try it out for a week and see how you do.

10. Lower the price of your haircut.

Lots of salons offer a discounted rate if you’re willing to be styled by a trainee. The haircuts rarely look different, so try it out and enjoy your new look.
