5 Things to Do Before The First Day of Classes

Whether you’re an incoming freshman, or you’ve already ran a few laps in your college career, you probably know exactly what those first-day-of-class nerves feel like. After all, it’s a brand new schedule with new teachers, new classmates, and new coursework. The good news? You can cut out some of the nerves and uncertainty by preparing for this day. Here’s what we suggest doing.

1. Get your supplies in order.

Your first day probably won’t entail a ton of supplies, but it’s safe to say that a loose piece of paper and a pen probably won’t cut it. Make sure you’ve got a notebook for each class (or at least one that has a section for each subject), a working pen, and a folder for all the syllabuses you’ll get. A planner and some highlighters are a plus, too!

2. Make sure the textbook is available.

Did you order your textbooks yet? If so, great! If not, no worries…we get it! Sometimes you want to feel out your classes before making this purchase. Just make sure that the book is still well in stock, or that there’s a digital version available. The last thing you need is to learn you’ll need the textbook ASAP, only to find out it’s out of stock.

3. Map your route.

Imagine getting lost on your first day of classes! It happens, but why deal with that stress if you don’t have to? Take a screenshot of the campus map on your phone so you can easily pull it up if you get lost, or walk through your schedule ahead of time so you’re confident in your route. You’ll thank yourself.

4. Get some insights.

Okay, so you don’t have to get too crazy here, but a little bit of research can help ease some of your uncertainty. If you know anyone who has taken the courses on your schedule in the past, just shoot them a quick text asking what to expect. It also helps checking some of your school’s Facebook groups. Students are likely already sharing insights on certain classes, and if not — why not start the conversation?

5. Figure out your lunch break.

Of course, we had to mention this! Can you imagine a full day of classes on an empty stomach? Figure out when you have a break between classes for a quick bite, and see if any of your friends are free to join. The next step? Find out which lunch spots are most convenient for your schedule, whether it’s the corner cafe by your morning lecture or one of your school’s dining halls in the center of campus.

One thing I do to prepare for classes is getting a good night’s sleep. The first day is always the hardest and college is no exception! Also, it helps not to stress about too much about your classes because–take it from me, you’ll lose more sleep than you need to! Think positive!!! The moment you get in class, find a seat you like and strike up a conversation. It doesn’t hurt to get to know your peers’ interests, talents, hobbies, even majors! That’s what I did to prepare for my first day of college and it has payed off! You will not be disappointed, I promise!
