5 Reasons to Get Involved On Campus

You always hear everyone say that college brings about some of the best years of your life. What do we think? Well, college is really what you make of it! It definitely can be everything you expect and more — but first, you need to get involved. Here’s why.

1. It’s an effortless way to gain friends.

Obviously, we had to list this one first. One of the biggest fears in college is not forming a solid friend group, right? Joining a club or snagging an on-campus job makes building these friendships feel easy and natural. Just show up, be yourself and, just like that, you now have some buddies to visit the dining hall with!

2. You’ll get a sense of belonging.

College campuses can feel big…very big. But imagine being a part of the organization that’s responsible for planning some of your school’s biggest events or fundraisers. Imagine walking solo on campus, only to run into some friends from your campus job who invite you out for spontaneous lunch plans. Or imagine rocking a jersey from that college sport you joined, and then getting stopped for some friendly conversation because an alumni used to play on the same team. When you get involved, you’ll feel like you’re a part of something bigger than yourself…and it’s great!

3. It’s an easy (but effective!) resume builder.

There’s no doubt about it — getting involved looks great on your resume. Bonus points if you join a campus organization that’s related to your major. And, even more bonus points if you hold a leadership position within that organization!

4. You’ll learn important things about yourself.

The best way to learn more about your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, and things of that nature is to try new things. Not only can you join a variety of different types of clubs, but you can hold different positions and chairs within each organization and see where you feel strongest. This will also help you out when you start job searching and interviewing!

5. It’ll keep you busy.

College life is always bustling with activity, but sometimes you just need some help becoming a part of it. Instead of finding a quiet corner in the student center in between classes, how about joining in on that bake sale your organization is holding? Or instead of heading back to your dorm for a nap after an easy day of classes, how about meeting up with your friends from your campus job? Widen your options, guys!

Interesting article but it doesn’t state what I get involved in.

Does it matter how old you are? I am 47 and have gone back to college but would like to get involved.

    No i work full time

  4. Lala says:

Great information but being a homemaker and unemployed for the past 13 years and finally started my first year in college in 2016. Relocated to Florida 3 years ago, from N.Y.C it seems though people are anti-social. I can use some adult time and conversation every now and then. Although I am in the process of searching for employment. I can still make time for other activities on campus any suggestions? Maybe employment opportunities on campus that may hire me.
