Summer Jobs That Will Expand Your Professional Skill Set

If you’re under the impression that summer jobs for college students aren’t relevant to any sort of career, think again. Summer is one of the best times for career development in college. Most classes aren’t in session, there’s more opportunity for hands-on internship experience, and many students have more time to dedicate to a job.

Here’s how your summer job is expanding your professional skill set.

Camp Counselor

You might be playing water games and running obstacle courses all summer long, but you can bet there are still professional skills you’re sharpening as a camp counselor. First and foremost, let’s talk about those leadership skills—keeping a bunch of kids in check all day definitely falls into that category. But a master camp counselor doesn’t just require strong leadership, they also have to be a team player. Strong teamwork skills definitely translate across different careers as well.

Self Employment

We left this broad because there are plenty of ways you can go about self-employment—from running your own lawn-care or dog-walking gig to driving for a service like Uber or Lyft. You can also take on some freelancing opportunities that are specific to your major (that’s a win-win!). If you opt for this route, you’ll perfect skills like self-management, organization, communication, and reliability.

Server

Being a server doesn’t just mean skillfully balancing plates across your arms. It also means you’ll need great interpersonal skills with a knack for customer service. These skills are crucial for plenty of careers, as well! Adaptability is also a big one, as restaurant environments are always unpredictable (picky customers, guests needing special accommodations, large parties, etc.). This is near the top of the list of useful summer jobs for college students.

Receptionist/Assistant

A job as a receptionist or an administrative assistant offers plenty of transferable skills for your resume. Answering calls, emails, and chatting with others in a work setting means you’re constantly fine-tuning your professional communication skills. Organizational skills are also a big one here, as you’ll likely need to manage different files and databases. Now, here’s a great bonus—working with word-processing programs and Microsoft Excel means you’ll also sharpen some hard skills, too.

Baby Sitter/Nanny

We have to say, this is definitely a great summer gig if your future career revolves around children and education! But even if that’s not your chosen career path, rest assured there are still important things you can take away—like proven reliability and sharpened problem-solving skills.

Tutor

Tutors need to be effective communicators, great team players, and strong leaders. You’re essentially working closely with others in order to ensure their success, and that’s a professional capability that’s coveted in almost any career role.
